Joining Independent Clauses
Find the Sentence Core
- 先找主语，再找完整谓语；句子长短不决定它是否完整。
- IC（independent clause）有自己的主语和完整谓语，意思能独立成立。
The sensor failed.
sensor → failed；这是一个 IC。
The team repeated the test.
team → repeated；这是另一个 IC。
Three Ways to Join Two ICs
- 两个 IC 之间可以用句号、分号，或逗号＋符合句意的并列连词。
The sensor failed. The team repeated the test.
IC. IC.；句号后首字母大写。
The sensor failed; the team repeated the test.
IC; IC.；分号两边都必须完整。
The sensor failed, so the team repeated the test.
IC, so IC.；so 表结果。
Check the Connector
- and 表并列，but 表转折，so 表结果。选连接方式时也要检查意思。
- 两个 IC 之间只放一个逗号，会造成 comma splice；完全不连接，会造成 run-on。
- 不要看到 and 就自动加逗号；先判断它连接的是词语、共用主语的动作，还是两个 IC。
The team checked the sensor and repeated the test.
两个动作共用 The team，不因出现 and 就加逗号。
The team checked the sensor, and the technician recorded the result.
左右各有主语和完整谓语：team checked | technician recorded。
Review Routine
- 检查左边 → 检查右边 → 选择连接方式。
- 口头说出两边的主语＋完整谓语，再解释被排除的连接为什么不成立。
